Chronic Pain & Manual Osteopathy

Two types of primary pain: acute and chronic

Acute pain is a sudden occurrence caused by something specific, creating a sharp pain sensation. It is often short term, lasting no longer than 4-6 months. It goes away once the underlying cause of pain disappears.

Examples of Acute pain include:

•  Muscle strain/pull
•  Broken bones or fractures
•  Pain from a recent surgery (post-op)

​Chronic pain is an ongoing occurrence, usually long term lasting over 6 months. Dull, achy pain that continues after the injury or illness that caused it has disappeared. Pain signals remain active in the nervous system for weeks, month and years. People with no prior injury or body conditions can suffer from chronic pain. 

Examples of Chronic pain include:

• Headaches 
• Back pain, hip pain, and knee pain
• Arthritis 
• Fibromyalgia 
• Musculoskeletal disorders

 Chronic pain can cause physical stress on the body. Tension and tightness in the muscles, restrictions in motion, constant pain and discomfort during prolonged activities (sitting, walking, running, lying down).
